KEY TERMS IN ARMENIAN GENDER DISCOURSE: LINGUISTIC AND TRANSLATION ANALYSIS

Abstract
The present article examines the formation, semantic development, and functioning of key terms within Armenian gender discourse from linguistic and translation studies perspectives. Particular attention is paid to the terms gender, gender-sensitive, and gender-responsive, which have become integral components of contemporary academic, legal, and policy-related discourse in Armenia. The study explores the linguistic mechanisms through which these concepts entered Armenian, the translation strategies employed in their adaptation, and the semantic transformations that accompanied their institutionalization.
The analysis demonstrates that the development of Armenian gender terminology has been influenced not only by direct translation and lexical borrowing but also by processes of semantic reinterpretation, contextual adaptation, and terminological stabilization. Special attention is devoted to the term gender as a foundational concept of Armenian gender discourse, as well as to the emergence and functioning of the terms gender-sensitive and gender-responsive within policy, and governance frameworks. The study highlights the linguistic and conceptual distinctions between these terms and examines the ways in which international professional concepts have been integrated into the Armenian terminological system.
The findings suggest that the successful incorporation of gender-related terminology into Armenian depends on a balance between linguistic adequacy, semantic precision, and professional acceptance. The article contributes to the understanding of contemporary Armenian terminology development and provides insights into the interaction between language, translation, and social change.
