“FALSE FRIENDS OF THE TRANSLATOR”: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MILITARY TERMS OF FRENCH AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES

Abstract
Nowadays, because science and economics are becoming increasingly international, the number of borrowed words, mainly of Latin origin, coinciding in their external form, but with adjustments for the peculiarities of graphics and phonetics of a particular language, is increasing in the vocabulary of many languages. They are associated mainly with the field of politics, science, culture. However military affairs are no exception as well.
When translating military texts, translators make some mistakes due to “false friends of the translator”. These are words that correspond to each other in etymology and form, but which, having arisen and developed in two different civilizations, acquired different meanings. Having come to a new language, after losing old semantic connections, a borrowed word easily acquires new meanings that differ from the original meaning; it is necessary to take into account all the necessary linguistic nuances that will not lead to distortion of the context itself. It is impossible to learn all military words and phrases, but it is necessary to track emerging new words, phrases, expressions and be attentive to their use, selecting the necessary equivalent, taking into account all the meanings of the “false friends of the translator”.
